  • Open letter

    On a chair beside the fire,

    Lay papers with letters inspired.

    Dark black ink against white background;

    Giving vent to words thus found

    In the den- by the great chair

    Left a letter thus dropped there.

    In the den by angry flames,

    Lay a letter of forgotten names.

    Deep it reached beyond the sea,

    And questions answered- tenderly.

    Pleading, exhorting, or angry tone;

    The message had reached home.

  • Interesting play on words. Open letter has at least two meaning and the reader is left to decide which meaning works for this poem. Some letters are best left unopened.
